Top 10 Low-Carb Keto Restaurants: Houston

Cowboys live in Texas. Cowboys eat beef. If you’re looking for satisfying high-protein, low-carb cravings, check out our list of keto-friendly restaurants in Houston and eat like a real ranchero.

Houston is home to vintage American cowherd mentality. Its cuisine is hearty, heavy, and packs enough protein to help you wrangle an angry steer. Sounds very promising for every Ketonaut. But finding keto-friendly food in a sea of tex-mex joints filled with tortillas and burgers can be very challenging. But fret not, our guide has you covered. Houston is full of high-quality, keto friendliness to keep you in your best bullfighting shape.

#1 – Ruggles Black

Ruggles Black marries standard American steakhouse fare with Asian and Indian influence. The result is a mouth-watering blend of familiar foods that will surprise you. What’s more, Ruggles Black has its own keto menu! Everything on it, from the pepperoni pizza to the carbonara pasta (yes, pasta!), is keto-approved. Moreover, several items on their regular menu can fit a low-carb lifestyle – particularly the lemon-bacon snapper.

#2 – Christie’s

Christie’s has been serving the Houston area for over 100 years, and its Mediterranean-seafood-meets-American-beef menu is the perfect blend of Old World and New World keto options. Start with the cold-boiled gulf shrimp and a traditional Greek village salad. The rib eyes are perennial favorites for the main course, but we prefer the while bronzini, prepared Greek style with lemon, herbs, and olive oil.

The Grove is one of Houston’s classiest restaurants and function venues. Make sure you pass the dress code to enjoy their delicious low-carb offerings. Their artisanal cheeses come from local Texas dairy farms, and the raw oysters are brought in daily from the coast.

Their salads are excellent, and you can add any entrée protein to them if you prefer—either pair well with the roasted cauliflower or sauteed asparagus. The Grove definitely hits the spot for high-class keto.

#5 – Saldivia’s South American Grill

Salvidia’s is a unique restaurant in the Houston area. It boasts strong Italian and Uruguayan influence, and it’s the latter that brings out the keto-friendly dishes. The bacon-wrapped shrimp make a perfect low-carb starter. Next, try the delicious salmon salad with a perfectly paired vinaigrette.

Finally, we recommend the vacio for your entrée – a thick-cut Uruguayan skirt steak. If you’ve brought your appetite, or maybe keto reinforcements, try the parrillada, a mixed grill. It comes with vacio, boneless beef flat ribs, sausage, and chicken breast.

#6 – Taste of Texas

No list of Texas restaurants would be complete without at least one old-fashioned, straight-up American steakhouse. Taste of Texas fits the bill, offering a wide variety of cuts from small filets to ribeyes cut however thick you want – just ask the butcher! Speaking of which, Taste of Texas has its own butcher shop, so you can get the finest steaks Texas has to offer and bring them home for grilling.

We recommend starting with the jalapeno stuffed shrimp, then moving on to the porterhouse. The king of steaks has a generous filet and perfectly prepared strip. It’s the perfect keto-friendly dinner for a Texas steakhouse.

Grace’s blends traditional Sicilian cuisine with a bit of Texas and Louisiana. The result is a rich, flavorful menu with several low-carb and keto options. The shrimp and crab cocktail is a great starter that embraces the gulf coast heritage of the restaurant. For an entrée, try Aunt Margaret Ann’s Roasted Chicken or grilled lamb chops for filling and delicious low-carb satisfaction.

#8 – Riel

Riel offers a traditional gulf-coast cuisine infused with French Canadian and Ukrainian recipes. The steak tartare is the best low-carb starter. The meat is fresh and flavorful, while the acidity of the lemon cuts through the richness, leaving you ready for the next course.

For extra indulgence, try the Oysters Moscow – decadent and rich. For an entrée, the wagyu bone marrow is an earthy treat (minus the brioche!), but the hanger steak may have broader appeal. Just remember to avoid the pierogi to keep in the keto zone!

#9 – Lucille’s

Lucille’s offers traditional down-home southern cooking with a few modern twists. You would be right to think that low-carb and down-home southern do not usually go together. However, Lucille’s offers some great choices for people looking for a serving of keto comfort food.

The Caesar and mixed greens salads are delicious, even without the croutons. But the bone-in pork chop with cheddar grits, tobacco onion herb salad, and creamed collard green kimchi is a triumph. Moreover, the Tennesse hot duck (minus the bread!) is a rich, heavy entrée packed with healthy fats to keep you feeling satiated for hours.

If you are looking for the best upscale, keto-friendly dining in Houston, State of Grace could be it. Their oyster bar is the best in the city, and it offers a vast array of raw shellfish. Moreover, in a city full of great steak (this is Texas, after all), State of Grace offers the best. Whether it’s a ribeye, filet, or a strip, they are all roasted over Texas pecan and oak for that perfect, wood smoke flavor. We recommend the 18oz N.Y. strip with steak butter.
